Tattooing since 1995, I got my start at Gold Coast Tattoo in Marina, CA. It was the only shop in Monterey. We had the entire peninsula, all the military, the colleges, the tourist, Gold Coast was it. I was constantly busy. Gold Coast was your traditional street shop at that time. Primarily Walk-ins and lots of flash. The owner, Steve Hendricks, decided to open up another shop on Lighthouse Blvd, three blocks up from the historic Cannery Row (Stienbeck's the man). Amazing location. I worked at Gold Coast Tattoo for a total of seven years.
In 2002 I was ready to open my own custom shop, Broken Art Tattoo. I opened up in the back of my wife's boutique in Salinas. Things were good but I always knew there was more out there. I had been tattooing in Los Angeles for the past couple years, working out of friends' houses. It really started getting busy for me there too. So by 2004 I knew I wanted to make it permanent and move Broken Art Tattoo to LA. It took almost a year to find a location, I almost opened up True Tattoo with Clay Decker on Cahuenga. But I knew I wanted something a little less hollywood, So I found a basement in Silverlake and created my own underground tattoo lair.
In September of 2005 I re-opened Broken Art. I knew I wanted it to be unlike any other tattoo shop I had seen so I created an art studio / privatebar / lounge type of feel. I have been open for over a year and still don't have a sign out front, relying completely on word-of-mouth.

Rosie
I started my amazing tattoo journey back in 1993 on the desolate windswept prairie of southeastern Wyoming, where the men are men and the sheep are plenty. I was brought into the biz by none other than Ben Alvarez currently of Kansas City. I worked with Ben at Quality Tattoo on Grand Avenue in downtown Laramie. We worked and saved for about a year to move the shop up to the fair city of Everett, Washington with visions of tattooing the Navy stationed at Naval Station Everett. Being nearly completely ignorant regarding business matters the Puget Sound Tattoo Company located across from the Everett Library on Hoyt Avenue only managed to stay open for a few months during whichwe played much cribbage. Then I took my show on down the road to the Kansas City area where I hoped to get a job working for Grimm's Tattoo on Main Street. That was not in the cards and I ended up taking a job at Skin Illustrations on Massachusetts Avenue in Lawrence, Kansas where i worked for Uncle Russell for two long years. As fortune would have it a job opened up in Marina, California at Gold Coast Tattoo working for Steve Hendricks. I took that job and have been working out of the Monterey area on and off ever since. In 1998 I took a job working for the renowned Mao and Cathy Tatuaje Artistico in Madrid, Spain working for Mao. That was a great learning experience as I remained there for almost a year working with 8 other artists including Robert Hernandez, Filthy Bill, Mo'o, Vincent, Suso, Ottavio, Nicolai Griffone, and One-eyed Max. In 2000 I moved down to Austin, Texas hoping to ply my trade as a musician. I worked for several shops during my almost three year tenure there but the only one worth mentioning is Body Adorned on West Fifth Avenue working for Nick Andersen. I was able to work with a great crew there including Nick, Bobby Love, and one of my all-time favourite tattooists, Adam Roach. When I just couldn't allow myself to go any more broke I moved back to Monterey, California to work at Gold Coast. That was about 4 years ago in 2004. Working at Gold Coast during this period was a good opportunity to work with some other fine tattooists including Ed Cerro, Nate Gonzalez, Matt Soderberg, Zach Johnson, and Jenny Hulden. Now I am looking forward to working with the fine crew at Broken Art and making a new start in a fresh place. Where better than Los Angeles? I don't really specialize in any particular thing but i love to do blackwork if anyone is interested in it, especially polynesian style. I also love doing Japanese work and traditional Americana. At any rate I look forward to meeting you and doing some work on you. My work lasts forever ..... and that's a mighty long time.
